It really drives me nuts when people lie to themselves.
I’m talking about the negative stories you tell yourself each and every day.
I can’t lose weight. I’m a failure. I will never be able to buy a business.
Really? Can’t lose weight? Have you tried?
Have you strictly cut your calories, dropped sugar and alcohol, and worked out once per day? And done it consistently, every day for at least two months.
If so, you WILL lose weight. It’s a biological fact. No BS — I’ve done it.
So if you’re telling yourself you CAN’T do something… you are lying to yourself.
It’s more about whether you WANT to do it — THAT’S the real question.
Telling yourself a BS story is called a limiting belief… and it’s toxic.
Today, you are going to STOP telling yourself these lies.
I will show you how. It’s really simple.
Your subconscious brain — in the area called the basal ganglia and cerebellum — houses your memories and imagination.
Because these sides of the brain overlap, if you tell yourself enough times that you CAN’T do something, it’s burned into your memory.
Conversely, if you tell yourself you CAN do something enough times, your memory believes THAT.
Therefore, the stories you consistently tell yourself will either have positive or negative effects on your psychology.
Knowing this, we can intentionally replace our limiting beliefs with empowering truths…
Thereby turning negative experiences into highly positive ones since the empowering truths contain ONLY positive actions and benefits.
Now, you know I’m all about buying businesses…
Let’s say you don’t think you have the skill to do what I do, so you tell yourself “I can’t buy a business.”
Have you studied how to do it (enrolled in Dealmaker CEO, for example)? Created a deal specification? Found some deals? Spoken to sellers? Financiers, CPAs and lawyers? Made offers?
If you haven’t TAKEN ACTION to get the result, how do you know you can’t do it?
Even if you have done some of this stuff, have you done enough of it consistently to absolutely know you can’t do it?
The process for reframing limiting beliefs into empower truths is really simple:
So, let’s set this to practice:
I can’t buy a business.
Make an explicit commitment…
I WILL and I MUST buy a business. I absolutely crave the wealth creation, freedom and pride of becoming a business owner. I will dedicate 6-8 hours per week to do the necessary work, and if I make a mistake, I will learn from it. I will stay 100% committed to this outcome but flexible in my approach. I will not suffer failure; I will take it all as feedback and learn from it.
Now let’s build on that and make it real…
Be as specific as possible…
I want to buy an engineering business with $1M to $2M of revenues within 50 miles of Chicago and I will close that deal within 90 days. I will make at least $150,000 per year in income from that business, grow it for a maximum of three years, then sell it for at least $1M. I will use that money to expand my lifestyle, treat my family and friends and support my community.
Your WHAT should be super specific. The more specific, the more REAL you make it. Can you feel it?
I’m sick and tired of working for someone else for only $70K per year. I want to have no cap on my earning potential, spend as much time as I want with my family, not have to work on vacation, and be able to tell my buddies I don’t have a boss anymore because I am the boss. That my team are kicking butt back at the office while I play some golf with you guys and drink some beer.
People want to avoid pain and gain pleasure. Lock in how you’ll FEEL once you achieve the result you want. Also lock in how you’ll feel if you DON’T. These emotions will become your guiding light and your motivation.
When buying a business, you need to do the following…
(Cut out an hour of TV. Wake up an hour earlier or go to bed an hour later. Stop mindlessly surfing the internet. If you really want it, you will make the time.)
That’s it. Stop telling yourself BS stories.
Destroy your limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering truths.
Decide WHAT you want and WHY you want it (remember, define the most powerful benefits and feelings).
Create your massive action plan and execute on it like a banshee. Be relentless, intentional, take no prisoners.
